From 31st Jan 2016, visitors from 51 countries who transit (destined for a third country or region - HK, Macau, Taiwan etc with booked a through air ticket) via Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang within 144 hours (6 days) are exempted from visa for China. During the visa exemption period, the visitor is permitted to move around within Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang province.

Q 1: What nationals (passport holders) are eligible to apply for 144 hours transit visa?
A: Travelers from following 51 countries are eligible to apply for the 144-hour transit visa exemption, they are:

  • 24 Schengen countries in Europe: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherland, Poland, Portugal, Slovak, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
  • 13 other European countries: Russia, Great Britain, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania.
  • 6 American countries: The United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.
  • 2 Oceania countries: Australia and New Zealand.
  • 6 Asian countries: Republic of Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

Q 2: 144 hours transit visa is available at what international ports?
A: Will be granted a visa-free stay of up to 144 hours while in transit via following:

  • Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)
  • Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)
  • Shanghai Port of International Cruise Terminal
  • Shanghai Wusongkou Port of International Cruise
  • Port of Shanghai Railway
  • Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG)
  • Hangzhou International Airport (HGH)

Q 3: How to apply the 144 hrs China Transit visa?
A: After landing you will need to step for Immigration at airport. Find the counters that show "144 hours Transit Visa Exemption", following documents are required:

  • Valid passport or valid travel documents
  • Air ticket with confirmed date and seats for a third country (or region) and traveller shall depart from the above mentioned 7 ports within 144 hours.
  • Arrival & Departure Card form (completely filled up).

To confirm your travel plan you may be asked some questions, if everything is correct, the transit visa will be issued to you immediately.

Q 4: What is definition of 144 hours to avoid any overstay?
A: Validity of 144 hours starts from the next day 00:00am until up to 144 hours. For example, you enter Shanghai at 7am on 1st March 2016, then you can stay maximum till 24:00pm on 7th March 2016. Or you enter Shanghai at 23:00pm on 1st March 2016, you can stay maximum till 24:00pm on 7th March 2016.

If visitors are unable to depart on time due to unpredictable happenings, such as flight cancellation or treatment of sudden sickness/disease, they need to apply for a visa from Municipal Public Security Bureau (PSB).

Q 5: Any Restrictions of the 144-hour Visa-free Transit?
A: Transit visa regulation does not apply to visitors who travel on a single return flight (e.g., Hong Kong – Shanghai - Hong Kong), which means the destination and place of departure can not be the same. For example:
USA - Shanghai - Taiwan is eligible to apply 144 hours transit visa in shanghai.
USA - Singapore - Shanghai - USA is eligible to apply 144 hours transit visa in shanghai.
USA - Shanghai - USA is NOT eligible to apply 144 hours transit visa in shanghai.

Q 6: With 144-hour Visa-free Transit, which city can I visit?
A: With the 144-hrs transit visa, You are permitted to move around in the areas that open for foreigners but within Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang province.

Q 7: Can I enter China from shanghai (apply the transit visa) and leave China from Hangzhou?
A: Yes, you can. Hangzhou is one of the cities in Zhejiang province, during that 144 hours, you can travel to Zhejiang and leave China from Hangzhou, but only from Hangzhou airport.

Q 8: Can I enter China from shanghai (apply the transit visa) and go to Beijing?
A: No, you cannot. During that 144 hours, you can only move around Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. You are not permitted to visit any other places outside ofShanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang province.

Q 9: If I take a cruise from Korea - Shanghai - Japan, can I apply 144 hours transit visa?
A: Yes, you can. according to the Question 2, Shanghai Wusongkou Port for International Cruise is eligible to process 144 hours visa free transit.
